With the new football season upon us, it’s time to remind ourselves of our local club!
Woking Football Club was first formed in 1889, and joined the West Surrey league in 1895/1896, winning the title by one point on the final day of the season. Almost 21 years after the club was formed, it nearly folded for financial reasons, but the club bounced back and battled onwards and upwards through the Isthmian League years, FA cup glory, Promotions, New management and relegations to become a hugely popular Club.
Woking FC are also hot on community issues with the 'Football in the Community scheme' formally launched in 2004, which aimed to consolidate and grow the interface between the Club and the local community. The Football in the Community scheme is an independent group with its own steering committee meeting four time a year, made up of representatives from Woking Football Club, Woking Borough Council, Local Police, Sheerwater Maybury Partnership, WASPS (Woking Association for Primary Schools), Woking & District Secondary Schools Sports Council, Local Health Authority and Surrey FA. The scheme involves many different initiatives from soccer schools, summer holiday schemes, after school and lunch time clubs, lifestyles talks, and community football tournaments just to mention a few.
Season tickets are still available for the new season. See the Woking FC website here - http://www.wokingfc.co.uk/home/
