A SCHOOL’S future is guaranteed thanks to £5 million from the county council.

The investment means Sandcross School in Reigate can move all its classes to one site with newly-built facilities by September 2012, and provide space for extra pupils.

Head teacher Judith Constable welcomed the “exciting news”.

She said: “In September 2012 we will run out of space unless some additional buildings have been completed, so there is a very practical rationale behind the project.

“Also, we will now be able to offer excellent facilities for all our children.”

The Sandcross Lane school is currently spread across two sites. Its nursery and infant pupils are on a site in nearby Alexander Road, which will be sold.

Mrs Constable believes having everyone on one site will benefit the 613 pupils as well as parents and staff.

She said: “Each of our year groups has its own space and that principle will continue in the new building, but we do love to give children the chance to care for one another as they grow up.

“When we are all on one site, this kind of special sharing of learning will be much more embedded in the curriculum.”

The planned development, which has yet to start, will include the installation of 11 new classrooms, a library, new play areas and a remodelling of the junior school and entrance.

The money is part of a £9 million investment by the council, with funding also going to St John’s Church of England School in Dorking and Kingfield Infant School in Woking.

Tim Hall, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for change and efficiency, said: “This shows we are committed to investing in Surrey’s children and young people.”
