The MEND programme (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!) has come to
Woking! MEND is a fun course dedicated to helping reduce child obesity
levels. The MEND Programme is aimed at families with children aged 7 to
13 years whose weight is above the healthy range for their age and
height.
Programmes are free to attend and comprise of two sessions a week
for ten weeks. Woking Borough Council is now running MEND programmes at
various locations over the next two years (see MEND website).
The
course helps children to learn how to manage their own diet and
exercise and control their weight. The Programme will also teach
children and their parents about nutrition and eating a balanced and
varied diet.
The 20 MEND Programme sessions include one hour’s interactive
workshop for children and parents, followed by one hour’s exercise for
the children whilst the parents have an adult discussion.
Woking's
first programmes, ran at Sheerwater Community Centre started in April
2010, and have had positive responses so far, they are planned to run until the end of the year.
