ST GEORGE'S DAY IN WOKING - WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Every so often an email will go around and tell you that for the first time, the moon appears full twice in the same month, a month may have five sundays and a following wind and not since the Mayans have people jigged about so much with their celebrations. Surely, this email has missed my inbox to say that April 2011 seems laden with celebrations of every kind. I know St Georges day takes place every April 23, I am that culturally aware but, at the same time as Easter? A whole long weekend of it to be followed by another long weekend due to Royal Wedding celebrations and a bit of Maypole skipping for grown men?! Why this country is overdosing on patriotic fun at the moment with the odd misery of parents fed up with clearing up extra plates, cups, dishes, crisp packets and sticky haribos from carpets at the extended holidays the children seem to be enjoying, being the only fly in the ointment - but maybe that’s just me.

So, in order to fully appreciate the magnitude of whats going on around Woking for this St Georges Day I enlisted the help of an insider - a publican who explained to me what fun can be had this St Georges Day in her establishment. Antoinette Harvey runs The Crown pub in Horsell High Street ‘This weekend we have live music in the form of Ian Dury tribute band The Blox, roast beef sandwiches and Chapter 9 -the only whisky distilled in England as well as Real ales and traditional pub food’ All quintessentially English fayre- what more could you ask of a stout yeoman?
