Woking's Firework Celebrations

With so many firework displays around and about in Woking it would seem the town is spoiled for choice in how to celebrate traditionally on 5 November as well as in advance on 29 October. In Bisley, Ripley, Chobham and Woking Park to name but a few, there is a choice of funfairs, live music, barbeques parades and bonfires to satisfy many different tastes. It seems in recent years that organised displays have gained in popularity with many raising money for charity and providing a well organised and safe entertainment to commemorate the day when someone attempted and failed, to blow up Parliament. Now, this is traditionally marked by young children wearing day glo plastic necklaces and smearing candyfloss on the back of strangers coats who won't find out until the next day. On top of this you can now add 'Dad Neck Ache' - a common syndrome caused by holding toddlers on shoulders and straining your neck to see over a taller toddler on shoulder being held on by the wellies in front of you. Some people throw caution to the wind after this and with children in bed try unusual real ales and make arrangements to go to beer festivals and drink twigs with friends. Guy Fawkes was probably not a parent. A round up of the many events available can be found in our What's On guide.
For those who wish to stay at home and shout at their Dad's 'You're supposed to light it and run!' there is comprehensive advice on safe purchase of fireworks and more importantly, how to use them safely, as well as advice from the RSPCA on dealing with pets available on http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/InYourHome/FireSafety/DG_064665
