Sheerwater Road Changes Discussed By Woking Council

For many years residents and businesses in Sheerwater have raised the issue that the estate, with more cars and business parks has outgrown the road infrastructure, and one entrance and exit at either end is inadequate. Lorries having to make sharp right turns out of the end of Arnold Rd and drivers unable to turn right into Eve road make Monument Way even more congested at busy times and this in recent years coupled with increasing roadworks has made the area more risky for pedestrians and cyclists too.

Last Thursday 8 September Woking Borough Council discussed the Economic Redevelopment following concerns from Business park owners that the lack of proper road access was causing loss of income to the area, as firms were reluctant to move in. Plans, were submitted showing changes to the road structure at the Maybury end and a much larger roundabout being made by Bishop David Brown School. The junction of Albert Drive and Sheerwater Road was felt to be adequate.

From Maybury the proposal is that access to the estate be made via Monument Way East and no longer Arnold and Eve Roads. Also to be looked at is increased parking for residents as car ownership does not reflect the parking availability from when the area was first built.

Some concerns were raised by Councillors who felt that the cost of the project should be borne by Surrey County Council who are responsible for roads and not Woking Borough Council and have asked that this be looked into.
