Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following a robbery along the Basingstoke Canal towpath in Woking.

The incident occurred as the victim, a man in his 40s, was walking along the towpath from Sheerwater towards Maybury shortly after 6.30pm last Thursday (12 January). As he came to Monument Bridge he was approached by two men. The men asked the victim for a lighter and whether he had anything to sell before one of them dragged him to the floor and stole his wallet. The pair then made off along the canal in the Maybury Park direction.

The suspects are described as Asian men aged in their mid 20s. The first man was of a skinny build, around 5ft 10ins tall and was wearing a dark-coloured hoody, dark-coloured jogging bottoms, dark-coloured trainers and dark-coloured gloves. The second man was of a medium build, around 6ft tall and was wearing a dark-coloured zip-up jacket with a white t-shirt underneath and white trainers.

Detective Constable Mark Fordham, investigating, said: "The victim has been able to give descriptions of the suspects and I would urge anyone who believes they may have seen these men around the time of the incident to contact the police as a matter of urgency."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference WK/12/265. Alternatively, information can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously and free of charge by calling 0800 555 111.
