A FIRE at a cricket club in Old Woking has caused extensive damage to a container and its contents after a blaze overnight.

The incident at the Old Woking Cricket Club in Queen Elizabeth Way happened sometime between 11pm on Monday (February 4) and 4.45am the following morning.

Police have said it is not being linked to a suspected arson attack at St Peter's Church Centre on December 6, although an appeal has been made to report anyone seen acting suspiciously.

Flames engulfed a large metal container containing a quantity of petrol and garden equipment. The fire escalated causing the doors of the storage unit to blow out.

Detective Constable Richard Cooper investigating said: "It would appear that a fire was lit between two metal containers, this has then got out of control and due to the contents of one container it has spread.

"I would ask anyone who may have seen, or even heard, this fire or anyone acting suspiciously in the vicinity, to contact Surrey Police.

"I want to reassure the community that the incident is not being linked to any other arson attacks which have occurred across the borough in recent months."

Anyone with information is asked to all Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference WK/13/712. Alternatively the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
